Fazenda is a word of Portuguese origin (fazenda), which literally means a large farm or plantation in Brazil or Portugal.
-
In Brazil, it is a large estate where coffee, sugarcane, soybeans, cattle, etc. are grown.
-
During colonial times, slave labor was exploited there.
-
The owner of a fazenda was called a fazendeiro.
A fazenda included:
-
a main house (sometimes luxurious);
-
housing for workers and slaves;
-
a church or chapel;
-
outbuildings (stables, warehouses, mills);
-
fields, plantations, pastures.
In Brazil, the term is still used to refer to large agricultural lands. In Ukrainian colloquial speech, "fazenda" is sometimes jokingly used to refer to a summer house or a rural house with a plot.
