The goalkeeper in football is a person on the field who protects their team's goal from balls that opponents are trying to score. Simply put, it's the one who catches or deflects the balls to prevent them from hitting the net. The Ukrainian equivalent for the word “goalkeeper” is “воротар”. So if you hear “воротар”, know that it is the same football player, but in the language of our country.
When we talk about who a goalkeeper is in football, we mean a key role in the game, as they are the last line of defense before the opposing team can score a goal. So what is a goalkeeper? In English, this word means “one who keeps the goal”. Thus, as you can see, their task is literally to “keep” the goal safe.
If we recall a real example, we can mention Andriy Pyatov, a famous Ukrainian goalkeeper. For many years, he defended the goal of the national team of Ukraine and proved himself to be a true master of his craft. He caught and deflected balls from the strongest forwards, repeatedly saving his team from conceding goals.
