In political debates, newspaper columns, or television talk shows, this word appears more and more frequently. “The establishment has made a decision…”, “The fight against the establishment…”, “Representatives of the establishment…” — but who are these people? And why does this concept evoke both respect and resistance?
What is the “establishment”?
The word establishment is a transliteration of the English establishment, which literally means “institution” or “foundation”. However, in public discourse, it has long transcended its technical meaning.
The establishment is the influential elite of society. Those who are not just part of the political, economic, or cultural system, but set its tone. These are politicians, media owners, top managers, officials, authoritative journalists, and experts who shape the agenda, make decisions, or influence their adoption.
In other words, it is the “old guard” — those who are in power or close to it.
How to translate “establishment” into Ukrainian?
Depending on the context, various translation options are possible:
- Institution — when referring to a physical or organizational structure (for example, a government institution).
- Elite, top — if it concerns an influential group of people.
- System — when we mean the entire mechanism of power, institutions, and influences.
However, in modern Ukrainian journalism, the word “establishment” is often used without translation — as a term with its own cultural significance.
Social position: who is “inside” and who is “outside”?
The establishment is not a formal status, but rather a role in the social hierarchy. Some are part of the political establishment (government, parliament, presidential administration), some are part of the media (top editors, TV hosts), and some are part of the business circle (owners of banks or corporations).
At the same time, the opposition to the establishment is important. This can be a civic activist, an independent journalist, or a young politician who declares a fight against the “old system”. Such figures often gain support through anti-establishment rhetoric — especially during periods of crisis of trust in power.
Why is it important to understand the role of the establishment?
The world of politics and economics is a complex system of interconnections. Those who understand how it works have a better chance of effective participation in public life. The establishment is not an absolute evil or good — it is simply a structure that exists.
Knowledge about it can be useful:
- Citizens — for critical thinking and choosing a political position.
- Young professionals — for understanding how careers are built at the system level.
- Activists — for effective communication with decision-makers.
Cultural dimension
The establishment exists not only in politics. In culture, it is those who set trends: famous directors, literary critics, art curators. In science — authoritative academics and university leaders. In all these areas — those recognized by the system, and those who oppose it.
The establishment is not just about power. It is about the structure of influence. About how and by whom public decisions are formed. Understanding this term helps to see deeper: not just the news, but the mechanisms behind them.
