Ukrainian alcoholic traditions are hundreds of years old. Today, powerful enterprises and small craft productions are reviving forgotten ancient drinks alongside modern recipes. Each of the offerings is unique in its own way: authenticity and traditions are organically combined with universality, attracting the attention of connoisseurs from around the world.
Strong Drinks
The traditional Ukrainian product is wheat vodka. The most famous variations are pepper vodka, which is infused with hot peppers, and medovukha. By the way, it can be either low-alcohol or strong. The third place goes to zubrovka. Ukrainians have been infusing vodka with the herb zubrovka using their own unique recipes since ancient times.
A separate direction in this category is cognacs and brandies. The most famous places for producing these drinks are the Odesa and Kherson regions, as well as Transcarpathia. Today, cognac from Transcarpathia with Metaxa or Saint-Rémy VS class is increasingly being placed on the same level. And in the Odesa region, cognacs are produced according to original Armenian recipes.
The so-called tinctures — ancient infusions and liqueurs — are literally experiencing a second birth today. These include hrenovukha, dubivka, cherry liqueur, spotykach, kalganivka, and many others. Their compositions include herbs and berries, roots, and tree bark.
In our country, there are also local gin and whiskey productions. And although they are made according to traditional recipes, local raw materials and water give these drinks a special flavor.
Wines, Beers, and More
Most still and sparkling wines are produced in the Odesa, Mykolaiv, and Kherson regions, and of course, in Transcarpathia. Here, powerful factories and plants operate.
Meanwhile, the niche of fruit and berry wines, cider wines, and ciders is mainly occupied by small craft wineries. Their wines made from apples, pears, plums, cherries, raspberries, elderberries, gooseberries, currants, blackberries, and strawberries have a very interesting flavor profile and a special cozy aura.
Local breweries successfully compete with large breweries. While mass production mainly focuses on light and dark lagers, craft products more often include stouts, porters, IPAs, and sour beer varieties. Additionally, there are drinking meads, a wide selection of which is offered by the online market Maudau in bottles or cans.
On store shelves, there is always a wide selection of low-alcohol RTD cocktails — brandy, whiskey, or rum with cola, tequila with lime, vodka with lemon, gin with tonic, mojito, daiquiri, and so on. These are one hundred percent Ukrainian alcoholic products.
Many Ukrainian brands — both well-known and lesser-known — have their own lines of sweet liqueurs with a special local flavor. The situation with bitters is somewhat more complicated: they exist, but are essentially analogs of foreign drinks — Jägermeister, Becherovka. We hope that soon Ukraine will have its own authentic bitters and more.
