Incognito mode (or private mode) in the internet is a special browser mode in which browsing history, cookies, form data, or search queries are not saved after the window is closed.
What incognito mode does: Does not save:
- The history of websites you visited
- Cookies and site data
- The information you entered into forms (logins, search queries, etc.)
- Cache files (images, scripts)
Allows:
- To log into a site with a different account
- To check how the page looks for unregistered users
- To leave no traces in the browser history
What incognito mode does not hide:
- Your IP address
- Your activity from your internet provider
- Data for website owners (analytics still works)
- You from the system administrator at the office or school
Incognito is not anonymity. For complete anonymity, a VPN or Tor is needed.
