At the beginning of the 20th century, the emergence of electric light bulbs became a true technological breakthrough; however, it brought with it a new problem — harsh, blinding light that was uncomfortable for the eyes. The prominent Danish designer and architect Poul Henningsen dedicated years of research to tame this force. The result of his work was the legendary PH lamp series, introduced in the 1920s, which forever changed the perception of what quality lighting in a home should be.
Henningsen's collaboration with the manufacturer Louis Poulsen led to the creation of a whole line of models, where the size and color of the shades varied to achieve different atmospheres. The author experimented with painting the inner surfaces in red and golden shades to give the cold light the warmth and coziness of a traditional oil lamp. This approach made the PH lamp extremely popular, as it allowed people to feel comfortable in the new electrified world.
Today, the PH lamp is considered one of the highest achievements of Scandinavian modernism. Its silhouette is recognizable worldwide, and the original models from the 1920s and 1930s are collector's items. Despite the fact that incandescent lamp technologies have changed to LED, Henningsen's principles remain unchanged. This lamp proves that true design is not just about external beauty, but primarily about solving fundamental human comfort problems through intelligence and aesthetics.
