Offline is a mode when a device, program, or person is not connected to the internet or another network.
For example, if you turn off Wi-Fi and mobile internet on your smartphone, it goes offline. You can still use many of its features, but you won't be able to browse websites, receive new messages, or chat in messengers.
The word comes from the English offline, which literally means "out of the network".
What does it mean to be offline?
Today, the word "offline" is used not only regarding technology.
If a person is offline, it may mean that they:
are currently not using the internet;
have logged out of a messenger or social network;
are temporarily unavailable for online communication.
Because of this, phrases like the following are increasingly heard:
"I am offline right now."
"Message me later, I will be online in the evening."
"Let's discuss this offline."
In the last case, it refers to a personal conversation, not messaging over the internet.
How to write correctly: offline or off-line?
According to modern Ukrainian spelling norms, it is correct to write офлайн — with one letter ф.
This is the version used by modern dictionaries, mass media, and official publications.
The form "оффлайн" still occasionally appears on the internet, but it is already considered non-standard.
What is the difference between online and offline?
Online and offline are two opposite modes of operation.

For example, watching a video on YouTube requires an internet connection. But if the video was downloaded in advance, it can be watched even offline.
What is offline mode?
Offline mode is the ability to use a program or service without internet access.
Today, many applications work this way. They allow users to download necessary data in advance so that they can access it anywhere.
For example, offline can work with:
maps;
e-books;
music;
movies downloaded to the device;
notes;
some documents.
Offline mode is especially useful during travels when mobile connectivity is unstable or using the internet is expensive.
What do popular phrases with the word "offline" mean?
Since the word has long gone beyond computer terminology, it is used in various fields.
Offline meeting
This is a regular personal meeting of people in one place, not a video conference or call.
Offline store
This refers to a regular physical store where customers come in person. It is the opposite of an online store.
Offline learning
Learning that takes place in a school, university, or training center, rather than through video communication.
Offline event
A conference, exhibition, concert, lecture, or any other event that takes place live.
Can you use a phone without the internet?
Yes. Many features of modern smartphones work even without a network connection.
For example, you can:
take photos and record videos;
use a calculator;
read books that are already downloaded;
listen to music stored in the device's memory;
watch previously downloaded movies;
play games that do not require internet access.
That is why the absence of a network does not always mean that the phone becomes useless.
Why has the word "offline" become so popular?
Twenty years ago, this term was mostly used by programmers and IT specialists. With the spread of smartphones, social networks, and remote work, the word quickly entered everyday language.
Today, we naturally talk about offline stores, offline lessons, offline conferences, or even offline friendships. In all these cases, it refers to activities that occur not over the internet, but in real space.
Offline is a state of being without an internet connection or any activity that takes place out of the network. That is why this word is used not only to describe the operation of technology but also regarding learning, shopping, meetings, and communication.
It is easy to remember its meaning: online is a connection to the network, offline is without it. And although today most services operate over the internet, offline mode remains an important feature of many programs, and offline meetings are an integral part of our daily lives.
The term itself comes from the German language (kitsch) and appeared in the 19th century. It referred to cheap, mass-produced works of art that copied the “high style” but lost ...
